Making Money Online: How Writing Saved Us in Hard Times

By Clarissa Wilson

Fortunately, there are many ways that you can make money by working from home. However, the best way I have found to earn a living online is freelance writing. In 2007, I have started writing and still continue to do it successfully.

I have written for many sites and private clients doing many types of online writing. There are so many ways to make a living online as a writer. A few examples include article writing, blogging, press release writing, and social media copy.

I have done them all in my nine years of writing. You can do it too. Here is my story from my beginning to my current state of making money online through writing.

The Beginning

In January 2007, I was trying to find a way to make some extra money to help my husband. We had a computer and internet. So, I went online to research the different ways to make money. It was not long until I found the website, Associated Content. It was easy to make money with them.

Back then, you just had to sign up with an email address and start writing articles on your preferred topics. I made $90 my first month. It was not much, but I saw potential and kept doing it. Within a few years, Yahoo bought Associated Content. They kept all of us, but there were some changes to the guidelines.

Eventually, I became among the Top 1,000 Contributors for four consecutive years. After being on that list, it was not long before I made it on the list of the Hottest 500 Contributors. I was so happy about being on both lists, which gave me the confidence to keep doing it.

Then, I applied for Textbroker. While I did not make much with them I was able to make some money there. After Textbroker, I found and applied at other content mills.

I wrote for Demand Media Studios, Writer’s Domain, Writer’s Access, among others. I was not making a whole lot, but it was enough to help us every month.

Then, I found Examiner and worked with them for almost five years before they closed in July. I was also a top writer there and making decent money. By their termination, I had been writing for nine different channels. I really loved writing for them.

Thinking Differently

I went on the hunt for the next big thing. Everyone was talking about writing for private clients. I eventually found my own clients and had success writing for them.

I also got ripped off a few times. So, I will let you in on a few things that you need to keep in mind.

Always ask for a contract. Alternatively, you can have one ready for them.

Please keep a copy of the signed contract for your records. Do not hesitate to ask for some money upfront. It would be smart to use freelancing websites since they act as an intermediary to deter fraud.

Private clients are a great way to make money online because most of them pay more than content mills and revenue sharing sites.

If you are diligent in your search, you can find a few niche revenue sharing blogs like this one. For example, this site pays $50 per 10,000 unique views and $10 per 1,000 unique shares. I have yet to see another revenue sharing site that pays better than this one.

Kallen prefers that you send an email with some links to your best work along with your pitch.

I hope I have helped inspire you to use writing as a way to make money online.
